Welcome to School Nutrition!

Lunch Tray

Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The Lowndes County School Nutrition program provides quality meals and nutrition education that contribute to the nutritional well-being of our students and their performance at school. The school nutrition program (SNP) participates in the national school lunch, school breakfast and after school snack program at participating schools. All the programs are regulated and funded by the United States Department of Agriculture with the School and Community Nutrition Unit of the Georgia Department of Education overseeing the program administration.

Since nutrition affects physical growth and intellectual development, well-nourished children are better able to learn. It is our goal to provide quality food items that are (1) acceptable to customers, (2) accommodating to children with special needs, (3) consistent with the Dietary Guidelines and (4) served in a pleasant, attractive and safe environment by caring people. We plan, prepare and offer food choices as healthful examples for Lowndes County students to increase the likelihood they will learn to choose a healthful diet. The school nutrition program offers its kitchens and cafeterias as learning laboratories to support teachers with nutrition education activities in the classroom.

The nutrition program is committed to continuous development of knowledgeable professional staff. New staff members complete a thirty-hour course including food safety training in the nationally recognized ServSafe® program. Managers and assistant managers hold national certification in the advanced ServSafe® Program. Effective management and fiscal responsibility are also critical with our employees. Cooperation of parents and school faculty in prepayment for and timely repayment of charges help ensure our financial stability.

This Institution is an equal opportunity provider.
