Wellness Policy

The Lowndes County School District has developed a Wellness Policy concentrating on the whole child to include physical activity, smart food choices, and food nutrition. The Lowndes County School Nutrition Program welcomes all input from parents, staff, students, and community members. For more information on how to be a part of the school wellness program, please contact Donna Hendley, Nutrition Director, at (229) 245-2443 or [email protected].

All schools provide nutritional information upon request for all food items sold and served in the cafeteria. All schools have reviewed Smarter Lunchroom techniques and have implemented some of them. Farm to School (FTS) activities are evident in the schools due to the system just receiving their second Golden Radish Award. A comprehensive survey was sent to all faculty to fill out and return to the SNP Director to apply for the award. Some schools have school gardens while others grow herbs in the classroom. Farmers are invited to the schools as well as students taking field trips to local farms. Most schools participate in taste tests to determine what foods are acceptable to students to place on the school menu.
