Classified applicants must submit an electronic application for employment at https://www.applitrack.com/lowndes/onlineapp and attach all supporting documents to the electronic application.
3. What is the difference between Certified and Classified positions?
Certified positions are those that require a Teaching, Service, Leadership or certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Employment contracts are generally issued for these positions. Please refer to www.gapsc.com for the certification requirements for certified positions.
Classified positions are all other positions that require no state certificate for the position sought. Classified positions include the following: Bus Drivers, Bus Monitors, Custodians, Maintenance, School Nutrition, School Nurses, Physical and Occupational Therapists, Tudors, Clerical, and certain Directors, Assistant Directors, and Coordinators. These are employment-at-will positions. Contracts are not issued for these positions.
SPECIAL NOTE - Paraprofessionals are classified positions that require a Paraprofessional Certificate issued by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Please refer to www.gapsc.com for the certification requirements for paraprofessionals. The minimum educational level required is a high school diploma or a GED equivalent. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (formerly known as No Child Left Behind) requires that certain paraprofessional positions, depending upon the funding source and school, hold an Associate Degree or have completed a minimum of two years of study (60 semester hours) at an approved and accredited institution of higher education. This requirement may also be met by passing the ParaPro Assessment (See www.ets.org/parapro for details).
4. Will I be contacted for an interview?
The administrator/director will contact you if you are selected to participate in an interview. Due to the large volume of applicants, not everyone will receive notice to interview. The administrator/director is responsible for screening, interviewing, and recommending applicants for employment.
5. How do I become certified to teach?
The Georgia Professional Standards Commission is the licensing agency for the State of Georgia. To teach in a public school in Georgia, a certificate is required. The Georgia Professional Standard Commission's website can be accessed at www.gapsc.com. Please visit the website for detailed information regarding certification requirements. Prospective educators should refer to how to become a Georgia Educator link at http://www.gapsc.com/ProspectiveEducator/ProspectiveEducator.aspx for additional information. Noneducation majors should pay special attention to Rules 505-2-.01 through 505-2.04 found at www.gapsc.com.
6. Do you hire people on Provisional certificates?
Provisional certificates are no longer available; however, Lowndes County Schools accepts applications from candidates who hold or are eligible for Non-Renewable Professional certification. Non-Renewable certificates are issued upon the request of the school district after all pre-certification requirements have been met and an employment recommendation has been approved. Acceptance of this certificate may be limited by the Elementary and Secondary Act and Non-Renewable certificated individuals may not be eligible for certain federally funded positions. Noneducation majors should pay special attention to Rules 505-2-.01 through 505-2.04. Please note that the acceptance of an application of employment does not guarantee that you will be called for an interview and it does not guarantee employment for any term.
7. What is GTAPP?
The Georgia Teacher Academy for Preparation and Pedagogy is an "alternative" route to certification for non-educator prepared individuals who desire to enter the teaching profession. Please refer to http://www.gapsc.com/EducatorPreparation/GaTAPP/GaTAPP.aspx and Rules 505-2-.01 through 505-2.04 at www.gapsc.com. The Georgia Professional Standards Commission website also provides a listing of approved program providers for GTAPP and traditional educator preparation programs.
