Wes Taylor

Professional Biography

Mr. Wes Taylor has served as the Superintendent of the Lowndes County School System since July 1, 2012.  He oversees the day-to-day operations of the district by managing the Strategic Plan in accordance with the short term and long range goals.  He believes that students need to be encouraged and challenged to do their best in each of their endeavors.  He is a strong proponent of students being actively engaged in meaningful learning activities, and participating in extracurricular activities that interest them.  He has established a culture of high expectations by striving for Excellence Every Day in academics, the arts, and athletics.  Mr. Taylor states, “We strive to provide a quality education for each of our students, delivered by highly qualified, competent, and caring individuals in first-class facilities.” 

A dynamic educational leader with a vision to move Lowndes County Schools forward, Taylor joined the school system in 2003 as the principal of Lowndes High School.  Passionate about building relationships with the community and within the district, he has focused on ways to improve student achievement, provide more technology in classrooms, support employees through job embedded professional development, establish a responsible fund reserve, and improve communication throughout the community.  

His intuitive approach to problem-solving combines the ability to assess current organizational needs with a clear vision for the future.  He has established a culture of high expectations and assembled a leadership team of experts who work well together and are committed to providing a quality education for each student.

Mr. Taylor was a finalist for the Georgia Superintendent of the Year Award in 2018 and 2022.  He also received the Georgia School Superintendents Association “Bill Barr Leadership Award” in 2017.  In 2011 he was selected by the National Association of Secondary School Principals as the National High School Principal of the Year and was also named as the 2011 Georgia High School Principal of the Year.  He also received the “Professional Educator of the Year Award” and the “Outstanding Educator Award” from the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders.  Taylor is quick to share credit for these accolades with his hard working dedicated team.

Mr. Taylor has served on the Governor’s Education Advisory Council, the Governor’s Education Finance Study Commission, the Governor’s Dual Enrollment Funding Task Force, the Georgia State School Superintendents Advisory Council, and the Georgia School Superintendents Association Board of Directors.  He has also served as a mentor for new superintendents, Executive Coach for new principals through Kennesaw State University, is an Advisor for the Valdosta State University Education Leadership Program, and serves on the University of  Georgia College of Education Superintendents Advisory Council.  

Mr. Taylor earned his educational Specialist degree from Florida State University, his Master’s from Georgia Southwestern State University, and his Bachelor’s from the University of Georgia.
