School Choice and Tuition

Applications will be accepted June 26 to July 10, 2019, for School Choice (in-district transfers from zone to zone) and tuition requests for out-of-district students for the 2019-20 school year.

For any request granted, all costs and the responsibility for transportation must be provided by the parent/guardian. The transportation must be reliable and timely. Being chronically tardy, leaving early, excessive absences (unexcused or excused), or violations of the student code of conduct will be immediate automatic grounds for revoking the transfer and/or tuition.

It is the goal of Lowndes County Schools to provide as much choice to our residents as economically possible. However, the system must first meet the needs of students within the school attendance zones before allowing school choice transfers and accepting new tuition students. The growth of our system and the continuation of austerity budget cuts can make this extremely difficult especially at our larger schools.

At this time the system is accepting requests for school attendance zone changes (School Choice) and tuition requests – both for qualifying property owners and non-qualifying property owners - for the 2019-20 school year.

Parents/guardians have until July 10, 2019, to complete and submit a request.

Requests are being accepted for the following students:

  • Change of School Attendance Zone Requests (a.k.a. School Choice) for current Lowndes County School District residents who wish to change the school for which they attend 2018-19 school year.
  • Tuition Requests for non-Lowndes County School District Residents - Property Owners who own qualifying property within the Lowndes County School District. To qualify the primary custodial parent or guardian must own property in the Lowndes County School District with an individual personal interest in the real property consisting of a fair market value from the Lowndes County Board of Tax Assessors of not less than $15,000. A paid receipt from the most recent tax bill and a copy of the deed for property will be accepted as documentation and must accompany the application request. This documentation must be provided each year. A SEALED transcript from the previous school of the student which includes, academic grades, attendance reports, as well as behavior history must be provided. Tuition acceptance is contingent upon review of these records as well as adequate permanent available space as determined by the district. The student must reside with the primary custodial parent or guardian. Tuition, if granted, for these students will be $2,400 ($1,200 per semester) for the 2019-2020 school year. The first semester tuition will be due at the time of registration (June or July).
  • Tuition Requests for non-Lowndes County School District Residents who do not own Property within the Lowndes County School District. A SEALED transcript from the previous school of the student which includes, academic grades, attendance reports, as well as behavior history must be provided. Tuition acceptance is contingent upon review of these records as well as adequate permanent available space as determined by the system. The student must reside with the primary custodial parent or guardian. Tuition, if granted, for these students will be $3,500 ($1,750 per semester) for the 2019-2020 school year. The first semester tuition will be due at the time of registration (June or July).

Once all requests are received, they will be reviewed and evaluated in the following priority order:

  1. Change of School Attendance Zone Requests for current Lowndes County School District Residents
  2. Tuition Requests for those meeting the property ownership requirement
  3. Tuition Requests for those not meeting the property ownership requirement.

The school and grade that is requested must have adequate permanent space as determined by the district.

Tuition requests should list, in their preference order, three (3) elementary schools that are acceptable and at least two (2) middle schools. Tuition requests should also include a SEALED copy of the student(s) latest grade report, showing grades, attendance, and behavior from previous school.

A separate request must be made for each child in the family. Requests are accepted for Kindergarten through 12th grade students. Pre-K students do not qualify for transfers or tuition.

Any current parent/guardian with current school choice and/or tuition students having a sibling ready to enter school should contact the system’s Centralized Student Enrollment department for the appropriate application form. The department can be reached at 229-245-2250 – Central Registration.

All costs and the responsibility for transportation must be provided by the parent/guardian for any student receiving a school transfer and/or tuition. The transportation must be reliable and timely. Being chronically tardy, leaving early, excessive absences (unexcused or excused), or violations of the student code of conduct will be grounds for revoking the transfer and/or tuition.

Please choose the appropriate form, print, complete and submit. The mailing and faxing instructions are on each application. A separate request is required for each student. Completed requests can also be delivered to the Board of Education Central Enrollment Annex.

Note: At this time the system is simply gauging the number of requests for the 2019-2020 school year. Once received, all applications will be reviewed by the system’s attendance zoning committee. It is our goal to notify all applicants of the system’s decision no later than July 19, 2019.
