Superintendent Wes Taylor

Superintendent Wes Taylor
Mr. Wes Taylor was appointed Superintendent of the Lowndes County School System by the Lowndes County School Board effective July 1, 2012, after being sworn in on June 11, 2012.  Mr. Taylor recently completed the Georgia School Superintendents Association’s Superintendent Professional Development Program.   He has worked as a high school principal for 21 years: 10 years in Florida and 11 in Georgia, having served the last nine years as the principal of Lowndes High School.  Student achievement, school climate, staff morale, and student participation in extracurricular activities all improved dramatically under his leadership.  These positive changes at Lowndes High School stemmed from deep-rooted transformations in attitudes and procedures and a focus on achieving high academic standards.
The most convincing evidence of the change that occurred at Lowndes High School is unmistakably in the area of student achievement.  The Georgia High School Graduation Test scores steadily increased. While participation in the Advanced Placement program more than tripled,
the number of students scoring three or higher increased substantially.  The most notable gain, however, was in the graduation rate, which improved 15%.  These improvements can be attributed largely to Taylor’s fostering a culture of collaboration among teachers and a college-going culture among students.
Mr. Taylor believes that students need to be encouraged and challenged to do their best in each of their endeavors.  He is a strong proponent of students being actively engaged in meaningful learning activities and participating in extracurricular activities that interest them.  He also strives to hire highly-qualified and motivated teachers who want to see students excel.
Recently Mr. Taylor was selected by the National Association of Secondary School Principals as the 2011 National High School Principal of the Year.  He was also named the 2010 Georgia High School Principal of the Year by the Georgia Association of Secondary Principals.  In 2009 he received the Secondary Educator of the Year Award from the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and was recognized as a Distinguished Principal in 2008.
Mr. Taylor has served on the Governor’s Education Advisory Council, the Governor’s Education Finance Study Commission, Georgia State School Superintendent’s Principal Advisory Council, the Board of Directors for the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals, the Georgia High School Association Executive Committee, and he is a recent graduate of Leadership Lowndes.
Mr. Taylor earned his Educational Specialist Degree from Florida State University, a Master’s from Georgia Southwestern State University, and his Bachelor’s from the University of Georgia.  He has a passion for working with students and teachers to help them become the best that they can be in each of their undertakings.
