Twenty-eight Ag-Majors and 14 ag-minors learned about food processing July 3rd while visiting the Lowndes Food Processing Center or better know as "The Canning Plant". Led on the tour and activity by Agriculture teachers James Corbett and Andy Harrison the Ag-majors processed and canned boiled peanuts in the morning with the Ag-minors making salsa in the afternoon. The students were instructed on food safety and how different foods are processed and preserved. "The students really engaged in both activities and have really enjoyed the products they produced", according to Gina Bland, GHP Ag instructor. "We are glad we have such a fine facility which allows us to be involved in the instruction program of some of the best students in the state attending the summer GHP program" stated Andy Harrison of Lowndes High.
The Governors Honors Students are upcoming eleventh and twelfth grade students from across Georgia who is selected to spend six weeks of intensive study at Valdosta State University in their major area of study and an area of interest as a minor.
