Lowndes Board of Education Meeting

The Lowndes Board of Education invited Legislators to its July 17 board meeting.  State Senator Ellis Black, along with State Representatives Amy Carter, John Corbett, and Jay Shaw
were in attendance.  The Legislators addressed the state budget for education; indicating that 41% of the state budget is allocated for K-12 education.  They also discussed House Bill 139, the Teacher Retirement System, and tax revenue.

Other agenda items included providing federally funded tutoring services for the neglected and delinquent population housed at Raintree Village and the Georgia Sheriff’s Boys Ranch, grocery bids for school nutrition, central office warehouse renovations, HVAC updates at Hahira, Moulton-Branch, and Dewar Elementary Schools.  Assistant Superintendent, Ken Overman, gave a finance report and an update on Seven River Farm.  Revisions to the Student and Parent Handbook were also discussed.

During executive session, the board discussed the personnel list, which included hiring four new teachers, an assistant principal at Lowndes High School, as well as, naming a Director of Student Services.  Property and legal matters were also discussed.
