HMS Engineering Students Learn Project Management Skills

Students in the Technology Students Association (TSA) at Hahira Middle School (HMS) recently received hands-on experience in project management. Conner Chancy, Brayden Whidden and Maddox Whidden are participating in a construction challenge event offered by TSA and will compete in Athens, GA in early March. The event requires the team to submit a scale model/prototype with a portfolio that documents the use of their leadership and technical skills to fulfill an identified community need related to construction.

This year, HMS TSA focused their efforts on encouraging citizens to get outside and be more active. To accomplish this goal, the team designed and developed a proposal for a fitness trail that the local community could utilize to get more exercise and become more health conscious. The students created documentation, display boards and prototypes to pitch the idea to local officials. The prototypes were designed using 3D modeling software and printed with a 3D printer located in their technology lab. The proposed fitness trail was appropriately titled the “Beefit Trail” to match the Hahira Honeybee theme.

The team met with Hahira City Manager, Mr. Jonathan Sumner, to complete a feasibility analysis and assess their goals. Mr. Sumner was able to give the students valuable feedback on how to proceed with a project of this nature. These young men gained valuable experience in communicating with local officials, planning a task, coordinating schedules and time management.
