PUBLIC RECORD: Destruction of Records for Students with Disabilities

The Lowndes County School System’s Department of Special Education announces its intention to destroy data collected, maintained or used in the provision of a free appropriate public education for special education students who were born between January 1, 1983 and December 31, 1995 and who were enrolled in the Lowndes County School System.  Records of students who were born before January 1, 1982 have been destroyed per previous public notice and are not retrievable.

These records may be needed by the student or parent for Social Security or other reasons. If you, as the student or legal guardian of a former student, who was born between January 1, 1983 and December 31, 1995 would like copies of these records prior to destruction, contact the Office of Special Education at 229-316-1851.

Records of students who were evaluated by a school psychologist but not placed in a special education program are maintained for a period of five years after the date of the evaluation.

These records will be destroyed after December 31, 2018 unless there has been a request for a due process hearing under P.L. 94-142 or a complaint has been filed with the Office of Civil Rights, under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
